Just keep sending

Hey Reader!

I've sent a weekly email since October 2019.

That's no small feat — I started a business, lived through a pandemic, and rode every emotional up and down that comes with running something online. But I always said I'd hold to it, because I knew as soon as I got out of that rhythm, it'd be really hard to get back into it.

Were all those early emails good? Ha. No. Some were pretty weak — a few paragraphs, a couple links to things that weren't even mine. When I needed to fill a gap, I'd just point my list back to three old blog posts and hit send.

But I kept sending. And that, it turns out, is most of the secret.

Recently I sat down with my friend Chenell Basilio, and when I asked what really makes a newsletter effective — for the reader and the creator — she didn't say growth hacks or the trendy quiz. She said it's one thing: insanely valuable content.

Chenell would know. She runs Growth in Reverse, reverse-engineering exactly how the best newsletters online grow and make money — her own list is 50,000+ deep. I've known her for years (we met at a conference and I've loved watching her teach ever since — I got to see her speak at CEX 2025 in Cleveland), so having her on was pure joy.

We get into subject lines, staying consistent without burning out, what belongs in a great weekly email, how to engage readers right from your welcome sequence, what's actually working for list growth, and her soapbox on why staying human is your real edge in an AI world.

Hey Reader! Most of us were taught that a growing email list means more subscribers. More, more, more. Howeverrrrrr, I'd rather have the right people on my list than a lot of people on it. The ones who actually want what I send. The ones who care. That's what Sara Ecklin has been building over at Clean Plate Mama. We met through Kayla Burton's Food Blog Group Coaching, where I came in to talk email. A little while later, Sara emailed me — she'd reworked her welcome sequence and was seeing a...

📢 Watch me get roasted. More details below ↓ Hey Reader! Some things age well — like my 19-year friendship with my bestie Jenna. And some age so slowly you don't notice until you wake up one day — like this past August 1, when my business turned 8 — and realize you're not showing up online the way you feel inside. 😬 For me, that meant my welcome sequence. And my email template. And the long list of things I just know are missing. It irks me so much. For you, it might mean dozens of new...

📢 Watch me get roasted. More details below ↓ Hey Reader! In case you missed it, I’m about to go Full Vulnerable next week. My team roasted my 2019 welcome sequence, and I’m going to share about it on Wednesday. Come watch me transform my strategy in under an hour! I’ve been sitting on a pile of "what-to-dos” about updating my email strategy for months, and it finally got so annoying — since it wasn’t sharing the important things that you deserve to know when you join my list! — that I’ve had...
