Hey Reader!

Week one of the Foodie Email Series on the Happy Subscribers podcast is officially here — and I get to kick it off with this interview with one of my close friends and business bestie. 🥰

My friend Melissa of Design Eat Repeat lives 45 minutes from me, has been featured in Better Homes & Gardens and Country Living, and released her first cookbook in 2024 (you tell ME which is the best deal, lol JK).

She's also a self-described "baking tornado" who cracks butter sticks in half "like a Neanderthal" and does not aspire to be a pristine baker. I love her so much.

A few years back, Melissa came to me as a client. She had a big social audience — TikTok especially — and zero email strategy. She didn't have a product to sell yet. She just knew she didn't want to build everything on a platform she didn't own:

"I know I’ve got to do something so that if this goes away, I don't lose all of these people."

I set up her welcome sequence and nurture automations, and she was hunky-dory for a good long while.

Then a few months ago, I got snowed out of my house during a Nashville ice storm and spent five days on her couch. We unlocked a whole new level of her email strategy together (from her couch). She made me homemade waffles. It was a good deal for everyone.

Our pets eventually got along 😂

Now, in the few years since we first worked together:

  • She has a cookbook
  • A Crafty Bakers Club membership
  • And a list full of people who actually buy from her — not just follow her

In this week's Happy Subscribers episode, she's sharing how she built trust with her audience, converting them from loyal fans to actual customers.

How? She's using Kit to give completely different messages to different subscribers, leverages seasonal opt-ins, and has incorporated her offers into her automations.

For fifteen years, Liz Della Croce's email strategy ran on autopilot. Her blog, The Lemon Bowl, had been growing since 2010 — a loyal community of readers drawn to her globally-inspired recipes, her family's Syrian and Jewish dishes, and Liz herself. Her list was healthy. RSS emails were doing their thing. (We...
