Hey Reader! I started this business in a season when I didn’t have a lot left to give (read: burnout and depression). So whatever I built, as slowly as I was going, had to be something I could actually sustain. My friend Sam Vander Wielen learned that lesson too, but in a much different way. In 2018, Sam was caring for her dad during chemo. She had a business to run too — and everyone online was telling her she needed to go live to sell, like with workshops and webinars, but she couldn’t. So she built an evergreen funnel from her dad’s chemo room instead. And you know what? It’s still supporting her business today. What surprised me most when we sat down for this week’s Happy Subscribers interview wasn’t how much Sam’s added to her email strategy since then… it was how much she hasn’t. Her welcome is two emails long. She has two very different audiences on one list. She segments them, but mostly doesn’t act on that segmentation — because people change, and she wants to leave room for them to. In short, Sam figured out what she could actually sustain and refused to make it more complicated just because she could. We get into what she sends brand-new subscribers, the email that fills her inbox with replies every morning, how she writes her emails from start to finish, and how she listens for the actual words her audience uses. LISTEN NOW 👉 Sam Vander Wielen Needed Her Email to Work Without Her, So She Kept It Simple If your email strategy has started to feel like it needs seventeen moving parts to “count,” I think you’ll really like this one. And after you listen, reply and tell me what you’re keeping simple. (Seriously, I read every reply!) Let's Duett, Allea P.S. Sam is putting on a FREE live legal class on October 19! If getting the legal side of your business in order has also been hanging out on your “I really should do that...” list, you can save your spot here. |

Hey Reader! I've sent a weekly email since October 2019. That's no small feat — I started a business, lived through a pandemic, and rode every emotional up and down that comes with running something online. But I always said I'd hold to it, because I knew as soon as I got out of that rhythm, it'd be really hard to get back into it. Were all those early emails good? Ha. No. Some were pretty weak — a few paragraphs, a couple links to things that weren't even mine. When I needed to fill a gap,...
Hey Reader! Most of us were taught that a growing email list means more subscribers. More, more, more. Howeverrrrrr, I'd rather have the right people on my list than a lot of people on it. The ones who actually want what I send. The ones who care. That's what Sara Ecklin has been building over at Clean Plate Mama. We met through Kayla Burton's Food Blog Group Coaching, where I came in to talk email. A little while later, Sara emailed me — she'd reworked her welcome sequence and was seeing a...
📢 Watch me get roasted. More details below ↓ Hey Reader! Some things age well — like my 19-year friendship with my bestie Jenna. And some age so slowly you don't notice until you wake up one day — like this past August 1, when my business turned 8 — and realize you're not showing up online the way you feel inside. 😬 For me, that meant my welcome sequence. And my email template. And the long list of things I just know are missing. It irks me so much. For you, it might mean dozens of new...
